Your room isn't ugly, dahling. Just needs a little spiffing up. And you have the advantage of having a lot of space. First, place your pictures all together on one wall, which give it a pulled together look. Consider putting your bed at angle and moving your computer away from the bathroom door just for aesthetics. Your mum is a wonderful lady donating her limited time to sewing for you. Ask her to help you make long curtains and a matching bed cover which you can actually do with sheets and or a store bought coverlet depending on your preference. Fabric shower curtains can also be as beautiful as custom made curtains; regular curtains sewn together (ex.: poly dupoini silk) can make a lovely bed cover. You can also take scraps, if any, from the curtain/bed cover project and make a lampshade cover, garment bag or chair cover. This will give your entire room a pulled together, custom made look. I actually did this in my bedroom with satiny light weight coverlets since I very much dislike the furniture I have, covering a long dresser with one coverlet and changing that sad but efficient dresser into a vanity, with a glass top, placing another coverlet on top and at the foot of my bed and another over the headboard. The color is gold, and even my dear husband liked it, especially since it has enabled me to tolerate the furniture items in our bedroom for another year. I moved a brass lamp from another room into my bedroom and it looks great. My expenses were within my budget because I only buy items that are on sale.

You may want to invest in an area rug after you decide on your color palette for your curtains and bedspread. A neutral color may be best, but colors should always be vibrant. Consider the natural and artificial lighting of your room, as beige or creme white in the store could possibly look like dingy grey in your room. You could also consider covering one wall or door with matching sheets, which is extremely inexpensive and faster than painting. All you need is staple gun. Explore what colors make you feel happy, well and calm. You will be in this room for some time and will have to look at the colors/patterns every day. At 17, you may want your design to reflect the woman you are becoming and may not want to indulge in too many "young girl" colors or patterns.

Determine the theme/concept that you want your room to be. Create a notebook of your ideas and check out examples of them online. If you do eclectic, keep the concept pulled together with the color or pattern continuous. Check out thrift shops and estate sales for good deals in terms of cost as well as one of a kind items. Always think outside of the box, do not limit yourself in terms of fabric and designs. Once your have the idea in process, most things will flow into place. You may move one item around two or three different places before you find its "right" location.

What is important is the color and design of your bed coverings and curtains. No matter the cost, if you find an item unattractive or actually ugly, avoid it at all costs because it will be a well made, expensive but ugly curtain, bedspread or piece of furniture.

Keep me posted on your progress. I think it's absolutely wonderful a 17 year old cares about how their room looks.

Sweetie, he's not thinking of YOUR wallet, other than to drain it. Just tell him you feel he's served his purpose for you for as far as you'd like to go at THIS TIME. Ask him for his card and tell him, once the money is available, you'll look him up again. Simple. God, you're so sweet. Sleep well, you're not jipping any one. Believe me when I tell you, these designers don't even last at those stores for very long. Till you go back there in a few months, he'll be gone. Go shop within your means. You won't enjoy it if you feel you had to sacrifice too much to have it. And you don't even have to tell him you're buying anything from other stores. Just say, you're done shopping for now....period!
